For the 2nd season in a row, the Chicago Cubs are NL Central Champions.  They now head to the postseason for the 3rd straight season.  This is a historically significant accomplishment, and we talk about this success coming after a handful of years of bad teams.

On this, our 517th episode, we talk about the NLDS schedule and share our podcasting plans for the postseason.  We don't dig into the NLDS too much, although we do share who we think the Cubs should send to the mount to start these games.  Andy previews a Reds series that doesn't matter, Kurt shares a scary stat and we read some internet muscle flexes.

Thanks for downloading the 514th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast.  Wow, how things change in just one week.  Last week, the Cubs playoff chances had significantly dropped due to a bad week of baseball and a sweep by the Brewers.  Now, the Cubs have won six straight, including a sweep of the Cardinals...a sweep that likely put the Cardinals out of contention.  The playoff odds have soared and it looks like the Cubs will own the division for the 2nd year in a row.

On this episode, we talk about:

  • Chase got to throw out the first pitch!
  • How to get Cubs playoff tickets.
  • A lengthy hot-take discussion on John Lackey.
  • Albert Almora and Kyle Hendricks
  • Updated playoff odds.
  • How the Brewers and Cardinals would need to perform to catch the Cubs.
  • The upcoming series with the Rays.
  • Saturday's tailgate in Milwaukee.
  • Scary stat
  • Internet Muscle Flexes

It's a jam-packed episode and one of our longest in quite some time.  Enjoy!

On Saturday, July 29th, the Cubs community lost someone special to a lot of us.  John Arguello from Cubs Den passed away.  John came on the podcast several times to talk about Cubs prospects.  His most recent appearance was on June 7th.  Because a lot of the information is still relevant, I’d like to replay that conversation.  As I said on our last episode, John was insightful. Whether it was on the podcast or at the backfields in Mesa, I loved talking with John and hearing someone with a real baseball scout skillset talk about the game.  Like thousands of other Cubs fans, I will miss John and here’s my last conversation with him.

Then we get into the games.  The Cubs had plenty of opportunities to win the first two games of this series.  This should feel very familiar to Cubs fans.  Last year, before the All-Star break, the Cubs were scuffling.  The offense wasn't producing and the bullpen had some glaring issues.  Is the bullpen as unreliable as it feels right now?  Or are they not being given much breathing room by the offense?  We share our thoughts on the situation.

Thanks for downloading the 472nd episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast.  On this episode, we talk about the last game of the Cardinals series and the series with the Brewers in Milwaukee.  The Cubs won both series, 2 games to 1 and we've seen some really encouraging things from the team so far.  This episode, we focus more on the offense:

  • Kris Brant started the season 1-17 in the first four games.  He snapped out of that quickly and went 6-10 in the last two games of the Brewers series.
  • Jason Heyward is batting .333!  He has a hit in every game and appears to be getting really solid contact.  Maybe even more impressive is the fact he's only struck out once in 23 plate appearances in the first six games of the season.  f
  • Kurt talks about Kyle Schwarber in the lead-off spot and points to his high pitches per plate appearance.
  • We talk about the Baez/Heyward collision and while we're relieved nobody was injured, it's impressive to see the team playing just as hard as they did in 2016 when some fans expected a letdown in intensity.

Thanks for downloading this, the 464th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast.  Evan Altman and I have been trying to connect for months to get him on our podcast, and it's finally happened.

I really think you're going to enjoy this episode. With pitchers and catchers already in Mesa, and many of the position players there ahead of their reporting date, we look ahead to this 2017 season.

We leave very few current Cubs topics untouched in this discussion.

Thanks for downloading the 463rd episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast.  This is what you will hear in this episode:

  • The Cubs traded prospect Donnie Dewees to the Royals for pitcher Alec Mills.  We look at the reason the Cubs traded Dewees and how Mills addresses a weakness in this organization.
  • We discuss the new extra innings rule that will be implemented in a few lower levels of baseball.  Every half-inning past the 9th inning will start with a runner on 2nd base.  We share our thoughts on this change.
  • We look at a few Spring Training storylines that interest us.
    • Kurt is interested to see who will be Jon Lester's catcher and talks about the catcher situation as a whole.
    • Andy talks about Joe Maddon's options with the lead-off spot.
    • Corey will be paying attention to Albert Almora.

We wrap up the episode with some internet muscle flexes.

Thanks for downloading the 462nd episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast.  This is the first episode of our 9th season of the podcast.  It's been quite an off-season for us and all Cubs fans.  Our podcast is back and we're ready to start talking about the 2017 Cubs.

For all Cubs fans, off-seasons have been the time to put the pain of the previous season behind us and look forward to the upcoming season with optimism.  This off-season, we've been able to bask in World Series victory.  It's typically about looking to see where the holes and weaknesses are in the team and seeing how the front office decides to address those areas.  Things are different this season as the 2017 Cubs look very similar to the 2016 Cubs.

In this episode, you'll hear:

  • Corey talks about the off-season moves that were made after the 2008 season. These are the moves we were talking about in our very first episode.
  • Kurt talks about the addition of Wade Davis to the back-end of the bullpen.
  • Jorge Soler was traded to the Royals for Davis, so we talk about the trade and our favorite Soler memories.
  • Andy runs through the moves the Cubs made in the off-season to further strengthen the bullpen.
  • We look at some of the Spring Training invitees and share some important Spring Training dates.
  • Kurt shares some Kris Bryant related Scary Stats.
  • Internet Muscle Flexes

Thanks for downloading the 461st episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at The Unconventional Cubs Convention event.

As expected, interest in this year's Cubs Convention was off-the-charts and it was very difficult to get tickets.  We decided to collaborate with Danny Rockett of The Son Ranto Show and host an event for Cubs fans that weren't able to get passes to the convention.

We decided this event was the perfect opportunity to record our annual season prediction results episode.  Michael from Galesburg (and The Awesome 80s Podcast) returns to the podcast to do the heavy lifting.

Thanks to everyone that attended this event. It was truly special to celebrate Game 7 with you.  This episode was brought to you by all of our Patreon supporters. If you enjoy what we do, visit http://patreon.com/ivyenvy.

In this, the 456th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast, we are in full off-season mode. Cubs Convention sold out within seconds (probably) and we talk about how this is an indication of how difficult it will be to see the Cubs in 2017.

Kurt runs through the various awards that the Cubs have won in this MLB award-season. We also look at a couple that the Cubs were not able to win. The Cubs have added several players to their 40-man roster to avoid losing them in the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs sent several prospects to the Arizona Fall League and now that the season has wrapped up, we look at how they did. There’s also one former Cubs player that drew a lot of attention in the Fall League this year.

Then, we go through what we perceive to be team needs and talk about the different options the Cubs have to address those needs.

The majority of this episode is spent looking at the players on the 2016 Cubs team that are now free agents. We share our thoughts on if the Cubs are a good fit for that player and vice versa.

Theo Epstein has signed a 5-year extension, and we discuss that. Then we dive into listener questions, which take us all over the place. What a great time to be a Cubs fan. The Cubs just beat the Cardinals in a series in St. Louis. It’s the 14th of September and the Cubs are about to lock up the NL Central. The future is bright and we’re having a blast.

In this episode, we talk about Kyle Hendricks and his near no-no. This leads to a discussion about Joe West and how, because of his actions, he is bad for baseball. We get you caught up on the news in the last week of Cubs baseball. Jason McLeod may be on his way out of the organization, Javy is the emergency catcher if the Cubs carry 2 catchers in the playoffs.
