Ivy Envy - Chicago Cubs Fan Podcast (UNOFFICIAL) (general)

Thanks for downloading the 426th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. The Cubs went out to the west coast and swept the Padres in San Diego. We talk about that series, including the incredible defense of Javier Baez and the offensive production by the entire team, especially Kris Bryant and Addison Russell.

With lots of positives to talk about, we balance that with an attempt to figure out why Jason Heyward’s production has been so poor this year. We discover a few things that could be contributing to it, but no concrete explanation.

We throw in some Internet Muscle Flexes and Andy shares a classic Rube Waddell story with us.

Thanks for downloading the 425th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. The Cubs lost their weekend series to the Rockies and we talk about this series. The Cubs got a heck of a start from Mike Montgomery (and a great relief appearance from Cahill). Jason Heyward got the weekend off and hopefully that helps him get back on track at the plate.

The Cubs sent John Lackey and Hecton Rondon to the disabled list and brought up a couple of guys from Iowa. This leads to a discussion on the lack of quality pitching in the farm system.

Kurt shares a Scary Stat of the Week and we read some Internet Muscle Flexes.

Corey was at the day game on Tuesday and shares some thoughts on Aroldis Chapman. Are Hendricks and Hammel Cy Young worthy? There’s a lot of chatter and we discuss this idea. Kurt falls into a Scary Stat of the Week and Andy shares a Rube Waddell story with us.

We also answer a handful of listener questions and Andy shares a Rube Waddell story with us.

Thanks for downloading the 421st episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. The Chicago Cubs are on a roll. They’ve won 7 games in a row. They’re 28 games over .500. They have won every series since the All Star Break. They’re 11.5 games ahead of the Cardinals. Things are looking good. Then something dawns on us and we get real nervous about how this all might play out. Listen to find out what stopped us dead in our tracks.

Jorge Soler is back and hitting the ball well. Jake is back to being Jake (without as many strikeouts) and Kyle Hendricks looks better than we would have imagined he would.

Kurt shares a Hendricks Scary Stat, we read some internet muscle flexes, and there’s a fair amount of conversation to get us off track.

Thanks for downloading the 420th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. The Cubs just wrapped up a series win over the Marlins and we’ve got some real exciting games to talk about. First off, we look back on Sunday’s wild extra-innings game against the Mariners. Then in the final game of the Marlins series, the Cubs put together an unlikely comeback in the 9th.

After discussing the Cubs play since our last episode, we dip down into the minors and look at how some of the top prospects in the Cubs farm system are doing this season.

Thanks for downloading the 419th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. On this episode, we recap John Baker Day. We all three decided this may be our best baseball game experience. It was an incredible day and thanks to all of you that made it so special.

This episode was recorded before Sunday night’s Cubs/Mariners rubber-match. We talk about the first few games and discuss Arrieta. Is he back on track or are there some pretty alarming indicators?

It appears that Joe Maddon wants to keep this team fresh and adding Matusz to the rotation and resting Rizzo on Saturday are signs that he wants this team well rested for September and beyond. We also talk about how much Maddon may use Chapman.

The Cubs have made some roster moves, sending La Stella to Iowa and calling up Coghlan. The three of us feel that it’s difficult to see Coghlan with a long-term place on this team.

Kurt gives us a Scary Stat of the Week and we read several Internet Muscle Flexes.

For the second episode in a row, we’re forced to take the Aroldis Chapman topic on. We don’t come to any sort of resolution, other than wishing we weren’t faced with this situation. We sort through stuff a little more on this episode.

We also look at what impact his acquisition has on the bullpen. We know he can throw hard. He’s always made Cubs hitters look silly, but how good is he? We look at his shocking numbers.

We have a few listener questions and by the end of the episode we were ready for topics that don’t involve Aroldis Chapman.

Thanks for downloading the 416th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. On this episode, we talk about the Cubs series win over the New York Mets. The Cubs won the series 2 games to 1, but because Andy and Corey were at Tuesday night’s loss, we spend some time talking about the Cubs difficulties with hitting with runners in scoring position. We also look at the Hector Rondon and discuss whether or not he is “the guy”.

It’s not all negatives though, Jake Arrieta looked like the Jake we all know and love. Oh yeah, and the Cubs traded for a pitcher and sent Dan Vogelbach to the Mariners. We talk about this trade and how it could impact the Cubs now and in the future.

Kyle Hendricks is having a break-out season and we spend quite a bit of time looking at why he’s being successful without a high strikeout rate or low walk rate.

On this episode, we share some stats and do our best to identify where the problem areas are for the Cubs.

We try to gauge our concern, which as sports fans, varies by the moment…or pitch. These 24 straight days of Cubs games have not been fun, so this is your chance to listen to us complain and attempt to evaluate the team, and ourselves.

After two losses to the Mets, Cubs fans are feeling pretty down and we talk about why Cubs fans should be worried about the team’s recent performance and we try to put things into context.

Wow. What a terrible week of Cubs baseball. On this, the 410th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast, we talk about this 1-6 week. I can’t say I expected us to have a 1-6 week to talk about with the 2016 Cubs.

We use this episode to look at what has gone wrong over the last month of Cubs baseball. On June 1st, their winning percentage was .708 and it’s now about 60 points lower. So why is that? We look at offense, pitching and defense.

In an attempt to stay positive, we also look at some positives. In the month, the Cubs have a 13-11 record, so some things are going well.

We answer a few listener questions, one of them on Heyward’s offensive production. After a scary stat of the week, we read a few internet muscle flexes.

Thanks for downloading the 409th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. This is most likely the earliest recording in the history of our podcast. Nothing gets going in the morning like a series sweep at the hands of the Cardinals, right?

Well, this series was definitely frustrating. Whenever anything has looked bad for the Cubs this season, we’ve found the silver lining and we do that on this episode. However, it’s worth mentioning that the Cardinals are a good baseball team and they’re probably not going to go away without putting up a fight.

We also look at the roster moves the Cubs have made this week. Fowler and Richard went to the DL, Adam Warren was sent to AAA to stretch out to start some games and the Cubs brought up some bullpen relief (Edwards Jr., Concepcion, and Patton).

We discuss these players and then Andy shares a Rube story with us.

Thanks for downloading the 404th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. On this episode, we go back and draw a line at the Cardinals series almost two weeks ago and look at these last two weeks of Cubs baseball. The team had a bit of a rough stretch (slightly under .500 for a week or 10 days), and they have gone 10-3 since that point.

We also discuss the middle and back end of this rotation, focusing on Lackey, Hammel and Hendricks. With all 5 of the Cubs starters sporting ERAs under 3.00, these are the guys that stand out the most because you wouldn’t expect the back end of a rotation to be so dominant.

We cover lots of topics on the episode, including a scary stat of the week and a couple of internet muscle flexes.

Welcome to the 399th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. We are just 1 episode from #400!

On this episode, we talk about the Cubs series win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. There’s a lot of positives to discuss…and apparently the Pirates players and fans:

  1. Don’t like getting destroyed by the Cubs, who lead the season series 5-1 vs. the Pirates.
  2. Don’t think the Cubs are the best team in baseball, even though that 5-1 record (and 18 games over .500 in mid-May) would say otherwise.

So we talk a little about the drama in this series, although most, if not all of it came from the Pirates dugout and fanbase.

Kurt shares a Jon Lester scary stat that is a good example of why you shouldn’t pay attention to pitcher win-loss records.

On this episode, we premiere Katie Day’s new version of her song, “By the Lakeside.” Anyone that purchased this song through the embed below by Tuesday (May 17, 2016) night at midnight Pacific time will have their name entered into a drawing for a free Ivy Envy shirt.

With a shutout in the 2nd game of the doubleheader, a lot of focus is on Soler. Soler went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts in the game. We weigh in on the Soler issue and share what we think might be wrong.

Welcome to the 397th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. In the last week, the Cubs went 7-0, sweeping two of the top teams in the National League, the Pirates and the Nationals.

On this episode, we focus on the Nationals series. We start things off by talking about where our heads are and trying to wrap our minds around this 2016 Cubs team. Should we shed the “cautious” in “cautiously optimistic”?

We look at some of the individual performances that fueled this Cubs this week and have flown under the radar this season. Although the Cubs are 24-6, we do have some negatives to talk about. Heyward continues his slow start, although there are lots of positives with Heyward in the lineup. We also talk about Travis Wood and his somewhat shaky performances.

How did it happen? What will Schwarber’s recovery look like? How do other athletes recover from this injury/surgery? What might a 2017 Kyle Schwarber look like on the field? Will he play catcher? Can he play outfield? Do the Cubs need to trade him to an AL team so he can be a designated hitter? What does this mean for Schwarber’s service time/free agency date? What will the 2016 Cubs be without Schwarber? Who will play left field? We (attempt to) answer all of these questions on this episode.

However, these are Spring Training games, so there’s not a ton to talk about. We do share a few thoughts on what we’ve seen with the Cubs in the first four games of Spring Training. We also talk about a few things to pay attention to in the next week of Spring Training.

We answer several listener questions, share a Scary Stat of the Week, Andy provides us with a Rube Waddell story and we have a few internet muscle flexes.

Welcome to the 377th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. We’ve got a shorter episode for you this week. The big news of the week in Cubs-land was that the Cubs and Jake Arrieta avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing on a contract for 2016. Many Cubs fans wondered why the organization didn’t try to lock up Arrieta with a longer contract. We talk about the number that was settled on and some possible reasons a contract extension isn’t happening right now.

The Cubs brought back a familiar face in Matt Murton this week. Murton has been playing ball in Japan and returns on a minor league deal. We talk about his years with the Cubs, what he has accomplished in Japan and how the Cubs might plan to use him in 2016.

You have just a few more days to purchase your tickets to our Cubs/Brewers meet-up and tailgate in Milwaukee. Justin Jabs makes an appearance on the podcast to share why you should attend this event. You can purchase your tickets at http://ivyenvy.com/tailgate.

At the end of the show, we play some voicemail on your favorite Cubs memories from the 1980s.

On this, the 376th episode of the Ivy Envy Podcast, we’re mentally begin the march toward Spring Training.

MLB Pipeline has released it’s Top 100 MLB Prospect list and you’ll find several Cubs prospects on that list. We talk about the Cubs on the list and that leads us into a discussion about Spring Training non-roster invitees as two of those prospects were invited to Spring Training. We talk about all of the Spring Training dates and discuss the broadcast schedule.

We check in on the Jake Arrieta contract issue as arbitration hearings are scheduled in February. We share our opinions on how this will be resolved…or more accurately, how it won’t be resolved.

Speaking of contracts up-in-the-air, we check in on Dexter Fowler, who many believe may still end up with the Cubs.

At the beginning, we mention our Ivy Envy Cubs @ Brewers Meet-up and Tailgate. Tickets for this must be purchased by Friday, February 12th. To purchase yours, go to http://ivyenvy.com/tailgate

During the Cubs’ playoff run and right after the 2015 season ended, we talked on the podcast about the 2015 team being the most fun Cubs teams we had ever seen. Michael from Galesburg voiced his opposition immediately.

Since the last week was fairly uneventful in the land of the Cubs, we decided to invite Michael and his podcast co-host, Lawrence onto the podcast. Michael and Lawrence do The Awesome 80’s Podcast, so you can understand why the ’89 Cubs team holds a special place in Michael’s heart.

What you’ll hear is a wandering conversation about 80’s baseball movies, the Cubs in the 80’s, comparing the ’89 team to the ’15 team, some references to ’98 and ’03, and a side conversation about the history of Pekin High School.

On this episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast, we recap the INCREDIBLE last week in Cubs off-season moves.

Last week, the Cubs snatched John Lackey away from the Cardinals and this week, the Cubs convinced Jason Heyward to leave St. Louis for less money…and that doesn’t sit well with the best fans in baseball.

The Cubs also signed central Illinois native, Ben Zobrist (for less money than other teams offered).

The sad news of the week was that these signings were facilitated by the Cubs trading Starlin Castro to the New York Yankees. We talk reflect on the Starlin-era and share some scary stats and our favorite Castro memories.

Like most Cubs fans, our initial reactions to this signing (and even the rumors that the Cubs were interested) were not exactly positive. We share our initial reservations about the signing and then discuss what we like about the Cubs signing Lackey.

We talk about Edgar Olmos, the latest Chris Bosio project. Reports came out this week that Javier Baez will get time in center field in the winter league this off-season. We talk about the impact that could have on the 2016 Cubs.

We talk about what these awards mean to the individual players and the organization. We also look at how these awards could help the Cubs attract their desired free agents.

The Cubs have a new radio home, 670AM The Score. Crane Kenney also shared the Cubs plans to have their own network when the current tv deal has expired.

We’ve received a lot of email about the Cubs options with free agents, specifically with starting pitchers. On this episode, we explore the different routes the Cubs could take to strengthen their starting pitching, from free agents to trades.

It’s very likely that the next week of games will have no bearing on the Cubs position in the post-season, so we talk about where we think we’ll emotionally be in the next week. It’s the calm before the storm. Let’s hope it’s a long, sustained storm and not a flash flood.

Key pieces of the bullpen did not look sharp and that raises some concerns as the Cubs position themselves for the post-season.

The Donn Roach era MIGHT be over as the Cubs add Clayton Richard. It’s hard to say what Richard’s future with the Cubs is, but he performed well on Saturday night in the Cubs 7-1 win over the Marlins.

We have a number of listener email to read and we discuss various topics that they bring up. Kurt gives us his Scary Stat of the Week and we read a handful of internet muscle flexes.

On this week’s episode, we discuss our joy that the Cubs’ 5-game losing streak is over, but we don’t believe one win (by a 1-0 score) is enough to convince us the Cubs have turned the corner and have worked past the issues that led to a 5-game losing streak.

Although Kurt’s not on the episode, we share some scary stats, several bad scary stats and we actually have a couple of good scary stats from the bullpen to share.

Jorge Soler is rehabbing in Iowa and although (in two games) he hasn’t lit the world on fire offensively, his production at the plate is probably not the most important thing to pay attention to. After recovering from an ankle issue, the important thing is his physical confidence.

Tomorrow starts the International Free Agency signing period. We talk about the Cubs recent history with these signings and we talk about what they might do this season.

Welcome to the 329th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. It wasn’t a great week for Cubs fans. After taking the first two games in their series with the Dodgers (against the #1 and #2 starters), the Cubs dropped the last two games in the Dodgers series and then lost the first two games in their series against the Cardinals.

We talk about some of the things that have stood out to us in the last week, including the luck of the Cardinals and our disgust in their success. We talk about some injuries, including Jacob Turner being shut down.

We have several listener questions to answer, Kurt gives us his Scary Stat of the Week and we read a few internet muscle flexes.
