Ivy Envy - Chicago Cubs Fan Podcast (UNOFFICIAL)

On this, our 459th episode, we talk about the Cubs World Series film that aired on FS1 last weekend and is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD.  This video is special for Cubs fans because we didn't know if we'd ever get to watch one of these championship films on our favorite team.  Well, now we have one and Corey and Andy discuss it on this episode.

In this, the 456th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast, we are in full off-season mode. Cubs Convention sold out within seconds (probably) and we talk about how this is an indication of how difficult it will be to see the Cubs in 2017.

Kurt runs through the various awards that the Cubs have won in this MLB award-season. We also look at a couple that the Cubs were not able to win. The Cubs have added several players to their 40-man roster to avoid losing them in the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs sent several prospects to the Arizona Fall League and now that the season has wrapped up, we look at how they did. There’s also one former Cubs player that drew a lot of attention in the Fall League this year.

Then, we go through what we perceive to be team needs and talk about the different options the Cubs have to address those needs.

The majority of this episode is spent looking at the players on the 2016 Cubs team that are now free agents. We share our thoughts on if the Cubs are a good fit for that player and vice versa.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the Cardinals are a good baseball team and they’re probably not going to go away without putting up a fight.

We also look at the roster moves the Cubs have made this week. Fowler and Richard went to the DL, Adam Warren was sent to AAA to stretch out to start some games and the Cubs brought up some bullpen relief (Edwards Jr., Concepcion, and Patton).

We also talk about reasonable expectations for Almora and why some Cubs fans have unrealistic expectations on different prospects.

We briefly talk about the Cubs series win over the Phillies, mainly focusing on pitching.

We have several listener questions to answer, from the serious to the silly. Corey shares some scary stats and throws in a rare mid-week internet muscle flex.

Thanks for downloading the 404th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. On this episode, we go back and draw a line at the Cardinals series almost two weeks ago and look at these last two weeks of Cubs baseball. The team had a bit of a rough stretch (slightly under .500 for a week or 10 days), and they have gone 10-3 since that point.

We also discuss the middle and back end of this rotation, focusing on Lackey, Hammel and Hendricks. With all 5 of the Cubs starters sporting ERAs under 3.00, these are the guys that stand out the most because you wouldn’t expect the back end of a rotation to be so dominant.

We cover lots of topics on the episode, including a scary stat of the week and a couple of internet muscle flexes.

Welcome to the 403rd episode of the Ivy Envy Podcast. On this episode, we look back on how the Cubs performed (as a team and individuals) in the month of May. While it seemed like the team was spinning it’s wheels at times, they ended the season 18-10.

We get a little more specific and talk about the Cubs sweep over the Phillies over the weekend and the first few games of the series against the Dodgers at Wrigley. The first two games of the Dodgers series provided us with an incredibly good and an incredibly bad performance by the Cubs bullpen. We look into that a bit.

Kurt provides us with a Jake Arrieta scary stat, Andy shares a Rube Waddell story, and we read a few internet muscle flexes.

On this, the 402nd of the Ivy Envy Podcast, we talk about the Cubs’ series win over the Cardinals in St. Louis. It was a weird series, considering the Cubs lost in walk-off fashion on Monday and then won a wacky and nail-biting game on Wednesday.

In the episode, Corey talks about how the Cubs have been impressive, even while playing under .500 baseball over the last few series. He also defends Jorge Soler again after some social media discussions. Andy talks about pitching, both the good and the bad Cubs pitching in the series with the Cardinals.

Kurt previews the Cubs upcoming series with the Phillies and Andy tells a couple of Rube Waddell stories.

Welcome to the 401st episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. We start this episode off by talking about whether or not Cubs fans should be concerned about the Cubs recent habit of losing games and series.

We dive into the Giants series like Jason Heyward dives into a wall, making an incredible (and incredibly scary) catch. We talk about Heyward’s injury and the relief that all Cubs fans felt when the Cubs announced he would only be out 3-5 days.

In discussing the series, we also talk about Lester, Soler, Baez, and others. Andy previews the Cardinals series. Kurt has a scary stat of the week and read some internet muscle flexes.

Kurt previews the upcoming series with the Giants. We answer some listener questions…deciding who is the best pinch hitter in Cubs history. We finish off the episode with a Rube Waddell story.

Welcome to the 399th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. We are just 1 episode from #400!

On this episode, we talk about the Cubs series win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. There’s a lot of positives to discuss…and apparently the Pirates players and fans:

  1. Don’t like getting destroyed by the Cubs, who lead the season series 5-1 vs. the Pirates.
  2. Don’t think the Cubs are the best team in baseball, even though that 5-1 record (and 18 games over .500 in mid-May) would say otherwise.

So we talk a little about the drama in this series, although most, if not all of it came from the Pirates dugout and fanbase.

Kurt shares a Jon Lester scary stat that is a good example of why you shouldn’t pay attention to pitcher win-loss records.

On this episode, we premiere Katie Day’s new version of her song, “By the Lakeside.” Anyone that purchased this song through the embed below by Tuesday (May 17, 2016) night at midnight Pacific time will have their name entered into a drawing for a free Ivy Envy shirt.

The Cubs lost two games in one day and a lot of Cubs fans lost their minds. On this, the 398thepisode of The Ivy Envy Podcast, we try to reassure you that the Cubs are just fine. Their 25-8 record should have already done it, but some folks need a little more reassurance. We discuss what we right and what went wrong in this 3 game series with the Padres.

With a shutout in the 2nd game of the doubleheader, a lot of focus is on Soler. Soler went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts in the game. We weigh in on the Soler issue and share what we think might be wrong.

We share some scary stats and Andy spins a wonderful Rube Waddell story.

Welcome to the 397th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. In the last week, the Cubs went 7-0, sweeping two of the top teams in the National League, the Pirates and the Nationals.

On this episode, we focus on the Nationals series. We start things off by talking about where our heads are and trying to wrap our minds around this 2016 Cubs team. Should we shed the “cautious” in “cautiously optimistic”?

We look at some of the individual performances that fueled this Cubs this week and have flown under the radar this season. Although the Cubs are 24-6, we do have some negatives to talk about. Heyward continues his slow start, although there are lots of positives with Heyward in the lineup. We also talk about Travis Wood and his somewhat shaky performances.

We check in on Albert Almora and Willson Contreras, who are both with Iowa and could join the Cubs this season.

We answer some listener questions, share some scary stats and read an internet muscle flex.

Thanks for downloading the 395th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. Rain and crummy weather has imposed it’s will on baseball games at Wrigley this week. For the 2nd straight series, the Cubs and opponents were only able to complete two games.

We use a shortened series with the Braves as an opportunity to focus on some of the players that have been performing very well, but we haven’t spent much time on yet this year. We mainly focus on the bullpen and the bench players.

We have several scary stats and internet muscle flexes to share on this episode.

While we spend a good amount of time swooning over Jake and the offensive explosion, we also look back on the series win and talk about several on-the-field and off-the-field topics.

Welcome to the 389th episode of The Ivy Envy Podcast. Unfortunately, parts of this episode have a more somber tone than our previous few episodes. Kyle Schwarber is out for the 2016 season and on this episode, we discuss the injury.

How did it happen? What will Schwarber’s recovery look like? How do other athletes recover from this injury/surgery? What might a 2017 Kyle Schwarber look like on the field? Will he play catcher? Can he play outfield? Do the Cubs need to trade him to an AL team so he can be a designated hitter? What does this mean for Schwarber’s service time/free agency date? What will the 2016 Cubs be without Schwarber? Who will play left field? We (attempt to) answer all of these questions on this episode.

We check in on Baez’s progress at extended Spring Training. Oh yeah…there’s baseball games (and Cubs wins) to talk about. We share a few thoughts from the Cubs series with Arizona.

Kurt gives us his Scary Stat of the Week and we read some internet muscle flexes.

Welcome to our first mid-week episode of the 2016 Cubs season. This also happens to be our 387thepisode.

On this episode, we swoon over the 2016 Cubs and their absolute destruction of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. After a slow Spring Training, the offense picks up where it left off in 2015, outscoring the Angels 15-1 in the two game series.

While the sample sizes are way too small to get too crazy about individual performances, Cubs fans have reason to be happy as the team heads back to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks.

We are back from our trip to Mesa and we share some of our thoughts on what we saw out there. We talk about the roster situation and the options the Cubs have for the last spot on the 25-man roster.

Jake Arrieta’s opening day start looked up-in-the-air a few days ago when he looked poor in a start vs. the Giants and then reportedly left with a thumb blister. Supposedly, Arrieta and his thumb are fine after a bullpen side session and he’s on track to take the mound next Monday night vs. the Angels in Anaheim to start the 2016 season.

During the Cubs’ playoff run and right after the 2015 season ended, we talked on the podcast about the 2015 team being the most fun Cubs teams we had ever seen. Michael from Galesburg voiced his opposition immediately.

What you’ll hear is a wandering conversation about 80’s baseball movies, the Cubs in the 80’s, comparing the ’89 team to the ’15 team, some references to ’98 and ’03, and a side conversation about the history of Pekin High School.
